YOGA: A RUN DOWN OF THE VARIOUS YOGA STYLES

With yoga all the rage, we know you want to step onto that mat. But deciphering which yoga class to attend can be a daunting task. For beginner yogis, choosing an introductory class can be more intimidating than the actual practice. Below is a run down of 7 different yoga styles.

Choosing the Right Yoga Styles for You

Hatha Yoga – Just starting out? Hatha yoga encompasses much more than just the poses. In traditional Hatha yoga there is an emphasis on disciplines, postures, purifications processes, pranayama (breathing) and meditation, however in the West, hatha yoga usually indicates a gentler practice.

Best for: Beginners, yogis looking to get back to their roots, yogis with injuries.

Hot 26 Yoga: This is similar to the Bikram form of yoga created by Bikram Choudhury in the 1970s, Bikram yoga is a 26 pose practice that runs for 90 minutes in a class heated to 40 degree Celsius. This class is similar, but instead of it running 90 minutes, it is a 60-minute class and much lower temperature at 35-40 degrees Celsius– the length and more bearable heat makes it much more accessible to yogis just starting out.

Best for: Yogis who can take the heat and yogis wanting to build endurance (both physically and mentally).

Power/Flow/Vinyasa: All are athletic and physically challenging yoga styles that have been widely popularized in Western societies. Commonly run in both hot and non-hot rooms.

Best for: The seasoned yogi, the competitive yogi and the ‘I love to sweat’ yogi.

Aerial: An acrobatic form of yoga where you will be suspended from a specialized hammock like contraption. This style of yoga is rapidly growing in popularity.

Best for: Yogis looking for adventure, yogis that are really kids at heart and yogis wishing they could fly.

Yin: One of the lesser known and practiced yoga styles, but also one that is of equal, if not, greater importance than any of the mentioned above. Yin yoga targets the deep connective tissue and fascia. Yin yoga helps to better facilitate the flow of energy in your body. That is why many yogis that practice yin yoga find themselves experiencing an array of emotions during their yin practice.

Best for: everyone. Period.
